Defining Safe Operations at MYTCL

Every employee, contractor and visitor is not only made aware of the safety protocols and procedures at Myanmar Yang Tse Copper Limited, but also held responsible for their safety and for that of their colleagues. Senior management, site management and safety management employees are accountable for ensuring that all of our employees, contractors and visitors return home safely from our operations.

Our safety and health management systems are designed to prevent accidents, injuries and even occupational diseases. Every single person working for us is expected to think about the risks of their tasks before they begin working new projects, continuing with long-term assignments and day to day routine tasks so that incidents and injuries are not only anticipated, but actions are taken towards prevention. Training programs and management teams are constantly at work to ensure that safety is always taken seriously and is the principal achievement in MYTCL’s daily operating endeavors.

Our overall safety and health performance for 2017 was successful and below an LTIFR Rate of 0.90. We also report progress in several leading indicators such as safety inspections and trailing indicators, and lost time to injury - incident rate (LTI-IR) incidents. Nevertheless, as we grow in employee numbers, the spectrum and scope of our production increase will without doubt challenge our safety records, and this is a reality we choose to acknowledge with foresight by additional training and clarity of safety precautionary measures. We at Myanmar Yang Tse Copper Limited will continue to build safety awareness throughout the organisation and to improve our safety systems with determined success.

Occupational Health at MYTCL

At Myanmar Yang Tse Copper Limited we continue with our existing, long-standing occupational health monitoring programs and also use our Safety and Environment Research division in conjunction with World Bank Standards and Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) to evaluate how our health surveillance programs can be improved.

SGS core services provided to MYTCL can be divided into four categories:

  • Inspection: SGS’s comprehensive range of world-leading inspection and verification services, such as checking the condition and weight of traded goods at transshipment, help us to control quantity and quality, and meet all relevant regulatory requirements across different regions and markets.
  • Testing: SGS’s global network of testing facilities, staffed by knowledgeable and experienced personnel, enable us to reduce risks, shorten time to market and test the quality, safety and performance of our products against relevant health, safety and regulatory standards.
  • Certification: SGS enables MYTCL to demonstrate that our products, processes, systems and services are compliant with both national and international standards and regulations, as well as customer defined standards, through certification.
  • Verification: SGS ensures that products and services comply with global standards and local regulations. Combining global coverage with local knowledge, unrivalled experience and expertise within the mining industry, SGS covers the entire supply chain from raw materials to final consumption.

We are continually working to place more emphasis on identifying workplace exposures and assessing whether the existing monitoring programs need improvement to properly address the exposure risks. Our primary occupational health exposures include noise, diesel particulate matter, dust, vibration repercussions (building and facility stability), and some chemicals that are used in our copper production processes.
